Which apps or platforms does the Phantom Chessboard connect to?
Phantom Chess connects directly to Lichess and chess.com, allowing you to play against millions of players worldwide or challenge AI opponents. Both platforms offer live matches, puzzles, and training modes.
Our software is open source, so developers can integrate more apps in the future. We’ll keep updating compatibility as new integrations become available.
Can the Phantom Chessboard move pieces without the app?
No, the board requires the Phantom app to connect to the internet and control the mechanism.
Without the app, you can still enjoy Phantom as a beautiful, high-quality traditional chessboard, but the automatic movement feature will not work.
How does the Phantom Chessboard connect to the internet?
The board pairs with your smartphone via Bluetooth. Once connected, the app uses your phone’s internet connection to find online matches, play against bots, or use other smart features.
How much noise does the board make?
Phantom is designed to be quiet and smooth. The most noticeable sound is a soft sliding noise as the magnet moves a piece across the board. The mechanism itself is almost silent.

What happens if I make an illegal move?
If you attempt an illegal move, the board’s mechanism will gently return the piece to its original square.
When playing online through the app, you’ll also receive an on-screen notification explaining why the move isn’t valid.
Can the board automatically set up a new game?
Yes — but only if all pieces are already off the board.
To start a first game or after partial setups, you’ll need to place the pieces manually in their starting positions. From there, Phantom can reset and set up positions automatically after each match.
Can I play offline?
Yes — in offline mode, Phantom works like a premium, handcrafted chess set. However, the self-moving piece feature requires the app and an internet connection.
Does Phantom support physical over-the-board play with a remote opponent?
Yes — you can play against another Phantom Chessboard owner anywhere in the world. Moves will be mirrored in real time on both boards, creating the feeling of sitting across from each other even if you’re miles apart.
How accurate is the piece movement?
Phantom uses precision-engineered electromagnetic mechanics to ensure pieces move smoothly to the exact square, every time, without drifting or misalignment.
Is Phantom compatible with different chess piece designs?
Phantom works with our custom magnetic pieces, designed for smooth, balanced movement. Third-party pieces without the built-in magnetic base are not compatible.
How long does the battery last in Wireless mode?
The cordless version has a 2200 mAh Li-ion battery. It can last up to 30 consecutive games in game mode and about 2-3 hours in sculpture mode at the lowest speed. The battery charges from 0 to 100% in roughly 5 hours.
Can I customize game speed or piece movement speed?
Yes — within the Phantom app, you can adjust the speed for a faster or more relaxed game pace.
How durable is the Phantom Chessboard?
Phantom is made with premium materials, reinforced internal mechanics, and designed for thousands of hours of play. With proper care, it will last for many years.
What is the Phantom Chessboard warranty?
We offer a 1-year warranty for any manufacturing defects, excluding damage from misuse, accidents, or modifications. Additionally, we provide a lifetime service for any repairs your board may need.
