How Robotic Chess Boards Work
The first time you see it, the effect is genuinely strange. A piece lifts slightly, slides across the board, settles on a new square, and nothing visible caused it to happen.
People reach underneath the board looking for the trick. There is one, and it is worth understanding, because the quality of that mechanism is most of what separates a good robotic board from an expensive disappointment.
The short answer
A magnet on a motorized arm moves beneath the playing surface. Each piece has a magnet in its base. The magnet under the board grabs the piece above it and drags it along the gaps between squares.
Everything else is refinement of that idea.
The four systems that have to work together
1. The gantry
Beneath the board sits a two-axis positioning system, conceptually similar to a 3D printer or a plotter. One axis runs left to right, the other front to back. Together they can place the magnet under any point on the board.
This is where cost lives. A cheap gantry has backlash: play in the belts or gears that means the magnet does not arrive exactly where the software thinks it did. Over a long game those small errors compound, and pieces start landing slightly off-centre until one of them catches an edge and topples.
A good gantry holds tolerance across thousands of moves. On Phantom Chessboard the mechanism is stainless steel and the whole assembly is enclosed, which keeps dust and stray objects out of the moving parts.
2. The magnet
The magnet has to be strong enough to hold a weighted piece through the board surface, but not so strong that it disturbs the pieces on neighbouring squares as it passes underneath.
That balance dictates the board's thickness and the piece weight. It is also why board makers specify their own pieces. On Phantom Chessboard the magnetic base is engineered to match the mechanism, and third-party pieces will not work: there is nothing for the magnet to grip.
3. The sensors
The board needs to know what you did. Sensors under each square detect the presence of a piece.
The important part is what happens when detection and expectation disagree. If you play an illegal move, Phantom Chessboard's mechanism gently returns the piece to its original square, and the app tells you why the move was rejected. This is the correct behaviour: silent failure is far more frustrating than a clear refusal.
4. The software
The app holds the game state, talks to Chess.com or Lichess, runs Stockfish or Maia if you are playing an engine, and turns each incoming move into a path for the gantry to follow.
Phantom Chessboard pairs to your phone over Bluetooth and uses the phone's internet connection. There is no Wi-Fi setup on the board itself.
The problem every robotic board has to solve
Here is the question that reveals whether a design is any good.
How do you move a knight?
A knight's move is two squares in one direction and one in the other. There is no straight path between origin and destination that does not pass directly through occupied squares. If the magnet dragged the knight in a straight diagonal, it would plough through whatever is in the way.
The answer is that the pieces do not travel across the centres of squares. They travel along the gaps between them.
The magnet takes the knight to the corner of its square, runs it along the grid lines between the other pieces, and delivers it to the destination. Watch a robotic board carefully during a knight move and you will see the piece hug the edges rather than cut across. It looks deliberate and slightly balletic, and it is the single cleverest part of the design.
The same trick handles captures. The captured piece is first walked off the board along the gaps, then the capturing piece travels in.
What a good implementation feels like
Speed is adjustable. On Phantom Chessboard you set movement speed in the app, from a slow, theatrical classical pace to something quick enough for blitz. This matters more than it sounds. A dramatic slow glide is wonderful for a Sunday game and maddening when you have thirty seconds on the clock.
The surface is clean. No LEDs, no visible sensors, no exposed circuits. On Phantom Chessboard the entire mechanism is hidden beneath the veneer, which is why the movement reads as uncanny rather than mechanical.
It resets itself. After a game, the board can return the pieces to their starting squares, provided all pieces are off the board first. From a partial setup, or for the very first game, you place the pieces by hand.
It is quiet, not silent. There is a soft sliding sound as a piece is drawn across the surface. The mechanism itself is close to inaudible. Anyone claiming complete silence is selling you something.
Why the board is not solid wood, and why that is correct
A precision gantry needs a flat, dimensionally stable surface above it with consistent thickness. The magnet's grip depends on the distance between it and the piece base, so any variation in that distance changes the holding force.
Solid wood panels move. They expand and contract with humidity, and over years they can cup or split. Above a mechanism with tight tolerances, that is a real failure mode.
So on Phantom Chessboard, the pieces are solid wood and the board is a composite core finished in natural wood veneer, maple or walnut, with contrasting inlays. The composite holds its geometry across seasons and climates. The veneer puts real grain and warmth where your hand and eye actually meet the board.
This is the honest engineering answer, and it is a better one than a solid panel would be. Treat "solid wood board" claims in this category with suspicion, and ask what the core is made of.
What you can do with it
Play online on real pieces. Your Chess.com or Lichess account, your real rating, your real opponents, moves appearing physically.
Practise against an engine. Stockfish for tournament-strength resistance, Maia for an opponent that makes human-shaped errors. Both adjust to your level.
Play another owner remotely. Two Phantom Chessboard owners anywhere in the world, moves mirrored on both boards in real time. The closest thing to sitting across from someone who is not there.
Replay historic games. Fischer against Spassky, move by move, on real squares.
The honest limitations
It requires the app. No phone connection, no automatic movement. It remains a good board and a good set, but the mechanism sleeps.
Pieces must be the matched set. The magnetic base is not optional.
Auto-setup needs a clear board. Pieces have to be off the surface before the board can place them.
Battery is finite. Cordless operation runs up to 30 consecutive games on a charge, then roughly five hours to recharge fully.
